Late night treat – a fiery mix of warm punch and caramelizing sugar!
We bring a fun German Christmas tradition to Lot 20 the cooler months. Mulled wine (brought to Perth by us) has become so popular it is in every bar during winter, so time to lift the game and pimp the mulled wine with some fire.
Fire Punch or Feuerzangenbowle will be back in April 2019.
What is it!
Mulled Wine (Glühwein), is a spiced, usually alcoholic drink, served warm. It is traditionally drunk during winter, especially around Christmas.
Feuerzangenbowle is a traditional German alcoholic drink which a rum-soaked sugarloaf is set on fire and drips into mulled wine. It is often part of a Christmas or New Year's Eve tradition. The name translates literally to fire-tongs punch.
Over Proof Rum or Admiralty Strength or Navy Strength or Gunpowder Rum came about so that should the rum leak into the gun powder it was of high enough alcoholic strength that the gunpowder would still ignite. In this case we just need our Zuckerhut (sugar cone) to catch alight.
How it's served
Feuerzangenbowle is prepared in a bowl, similar to a fondue, the bowl is filled with heated Mulled Wine, which has been spiced with Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Star Anise, Cloves and Orange Peel. A metal grate is placed across the top of the bowl to hold the Zuckerhut (literally means sugar hat). The sugar is soaked with rum and set alight causing the sugar to caramelize.
Served with a piece of housemade Strudel, this drink is great to share with the gathering of friends, while Perth may not get as cold as Germany on a chilly rainy Winters night what could be tastier?
